Home > RPCC & The City > RPCC 2024 Membership Drive

It’s our annual membership drive and we’re asking you to renew your membership or consider becoming a member.

Our goal is to always provide a voice for our community to our local government and ensure that our concerns and priorities are heard and addressed. We also work to provide special events for the community that allow us to meet our neighbors, socialize, and strengthen our community relationships.

If you follow us on social media, then you already know about many of our events and projects throughout the year: community cleanups, ice cream socials, and our third annual Movie in the Park.

This year, Rolando Park Community Council members voted to amend our bylaws and include a new membership level, Associate membership for anyone who’s not eligible for regular membership because they don’t reside in Rolando Park, but have an interest or concern in Rolando Park affairs. Associate members have the same membership rights as Rolando Park Community Council members, but cannot vote on Rolando Park concerns.

Have a voice in your community and support RPCC in continuing to make Rolando Park a great community!

Our 2024 priorities:

  1. Helping Village Green residents who were displaced by the January flooding
  2. Traffic calming & pedestrian safety
  3. Cleanups in the community: University, College, & other major streets
  4. Landscaping improvements & monument sign, College/College Grove
  5. Zena Canyon improvements
  6. Streamview Dr. illegal dumping

Helping Village Green residents who were displaced by the January flooding – Sadly, as many of you know, 57 Rolando Park families lost their homes and belongings in the flooding. Forty-seven families were able to return to their repaired apartments in late June. We held three restaurant fundraisers, raised private donations, and were able to provide the returning families with gift cards to help them with household items.

Traffic calming and pedestrian safety – Circulate San Diego joined us in January for a community walk audit. Multiple issues were identified, including a lack of crosswalks. Traffic studies were completed for the 3800 and 3900 blocks of Loma Alta and Aragon and 69th St from Celia Vista to University for traffic calming, but unfortunately, none of these streets qualified according to Traffic Engineering. Currently, we also have requests to evaluate the Marlowe/69th St intersection for a stop sign and extended red curbing at the Marlowe/Aragon intersection.

Community cleanups – We’ve had four street cleanups so far, including three on University Ave and a major cleanup and bulky item drop-off on Streamview Dr. We have three more scheduled through the end of the year. Our number of volunteers continues to grow and residents from neighboring communities are asking how they can participate in keeping our streets clean.

Monument sign at the College Ave./College Grove entrance to Rolando Park – Now called the Rolando Park Gateway. Last fall, members approved the landscape design and the design for the monument sign. A landscape architect donated her time to create the landscape plans for city review. We are now working on project funding and it’s estimated at $45,000-$50,000. On our behalf, Groundwork has applied for three grants and we are now applying for another County grant that will be submitted this fall.

Zena Canyon improvements – Last fall, at San Diego Unified School District’s encouragement, we contacted the city’s Parks and Recreation department to see if they would establish a joint use agreement for the canyon as they have with other district-owned canyons. Unfortunately, Zena Canyon didn’t meet their criteria, but the District indicated that they would be interested in selling the canyon to the city. There are environmental and funding issues, so this could be a long process, but residents overwhelmingly indicated on our recent infrastructure priority survey that this should be a number one priority and we just submitted this request to the city. In the meantime, the District did proceed with having the homeless encampments removed and brush abatement this past spring. Zena Canyon looks better today than it has the last few years and we’ll resume partnering with I Love A Clean San Diego for a community cleanup in Zena Canyon this fall.

Streamview Dr. illegal dumping – Illegal dumping occurs every day on Streamview Dr. Rolando Park joined with Redwood Village, Oak Park, and the Eastern Area Communities Planning Committee to request that the city install “No dumping” signs on Streamview Dr. We are working with our representatives from the Mayor’s Office and Council District 9 to get Environmental Services engaged in citing for the dumping and also begin a public education program.

Community events – We hosted several events this past year for the community including our best attended ice cream social ever and our third annual Movie in the Park in partnership with the Rolando Park PTA. We also sponsored events outside of Rolando Park in our local area including the Chollas Lake Spirit of Giving, a charity event with all donated clothing going to benefit the Kroc Center and Sharia’s Closet and we again helped to fund the Juneteenth Celebration at Chollas Lake.
